Background of NSA
Stutterers in Nepal are scattered. Stuttering is not officially recognized as a "handicap" in Nepal. People who stutter may have been aware of speech therapy to improve their fluency, however most people in Nepal are unaware that stuttering is a communication disorder. Until now there were no self-help organizations that looked at the problems of stutterers. Therefore, a need for an such association for stutterers was felt, and after persuasion of DSI/FSD a workshop was organized on 10 April 2003.Prior to the workshop, the DSI/FSD officers were in Nepal and consulted with several speech therapists who provided a list of people who stutter that had been to their clinics for counseling and therapy. People who were living in and around the valley were contacted and invited for the meeting at the Nepal Laryngectomees Association (NLA) and discussed the possibility of having a workshop funded by DSI/FSD. A workshop preparation and organizing committee was formed with the group of stutterers. The workshop was held with an important guest, Mr. Hermann Christmann from Denmark.
The theme of the workshop was "How to communicate with a person who stutters." The workshop was held on 10 April 2003 at the Durbar Hotel, Kathmandu in the presence of around 60 participants (Detailed report at http://disability.dk/)
